Teachers' Wish List

Teachers are a very special breed of people. They care so much for their students, our children, that very often they sacrifice things for themselves to provide things for the students to make their classroom experience a fond memory.

I never realized just how dedicated teachers are to their students until my husband began teaching. In the teachers' quest to make the students classroom experience a positive one they many times dig into their pockets and purses to purchase things for class. Teachers aren't given blank checks to purchase things for class. The Castro Valley Educational Foundation helps out by offering grants available but unfortunately we can not fulfill each grant request.

Now individuals, businesses and the community have the opportunity to thank our teachers for their dedication to the youth of Castro Valley by offering a helping hand.

The Castro Valley Educational Foundation is creating this page to collect the wishes of our teachers and letting everyone in on them so you can make a difference in our class rooms too.

Pick a wish from the list and send an email to cvef@live.com and put "Teachers' Wish List" in the subject line to let us know which wish you want to grant and we will put you in touch with the teacher. Then when the wish has been granted the wish will be updated to thank the donor (unless they prefer to be anonymous). You can grant as many wishes as you want, as often as you want. The teachers (and students) will be very grateful for each and every wish-come-true.

If there is a large wish listed, people can join together to make it come true. There is no limit to the number and methods to grant wishes. Our schools, teachers and students need all the assistance possible in these harsh economic times.

Description

Canyon Middle School

~$30-$40

30-40 sets of scissors. I have been trying to collect scissors over the years, but still only have about 5 for my students to use.

I am teaching Leadership for the first time this year, and we really need a class set of scissors so that my students can successfully make the posters and projects that they will use around the school.  We are constantly publicizing and creating props, and our efficiency is hindered by the lack of proper materials.  Not only would the scissors benefit my class, it would benefit the school since everything that the Leadership class does is for the good of the whole school.

While full-size scissors are preferred, kid-size scissors would also work just fine.  The kid-size scissors often come in a 2-pack for $1.99, which would put a class set at around $30-$40.

~$478

File cabinet with hanging folders, manila folders, and labels for my classroom.

I currently have no working file cabinet and am constantly looking for the materials I need.  I often waste valuable teacher prep time.  This time would be much better spent enhancing the students learning by developing and creating new and exciting material and lesson plans for the students.

I would like the school to receive a one-year subscription to this website I recently found: http://www.activehistory.co.uk

This site takes different time periods of history and have developed ways for students to interact with the people and events, including "talking heads" that you can interview, simulations, and links to current events connecting to history, to name just a few of the fun, yet content-packed activities on the site.It will help us make even more use out of our classroom and mobile computer labs.

Gently Used

Any usable musical instruments in good working order; guitars, drums, percussion instruments, horns, violins, etc. I am also interested in foreign type instruments of any kind.

Music exposure has proven to be very valuable in a child's learning experience. Exposing them to any music enhances their learning ability and expands their learning curve.

Various different instruments range in price from $10 to $300

~$20 each

Large package of AA, AAA, and 9 volt batteries (for Audio and Camera-related equipment for Video Journalism class).

Students run the sound system for parent, teacher, and student events. These events rely on battery power to a large extent. Having enough batteries on hand would allow students to be able to do their job without unnecessary downtime.

~$80

Nylon American Flag for our School Flag Pole.

Our current flag is worn and ready for retirement. Here is a link to an example: http://www.flyaflagnow.com/product/NS12x18, I think 5 feet x 9.5 feet would be the appropriate size. Students and teachers/staff at Vannoy have a monthly flag salute assembly.  It would be great to have a nice flag to salute!
